Today is the first day of MATS (Make Art That Sells) Bootcamp
Yay, I am so excited. Today we got our first assignment from Lilla Rogers’s MATS Bootcamp. I am excited but also nervous and unsure of my artwork. So many of the people in the bootcamp look like they are absolute pros at this. But I have to keep remembering that this is not a competition, it’s a chance to learn and grow, and have support from fellow artists.
Today we got a mini-assignment and next Monday we get the main assignment. Our mini-assignment is to draw a cuckoo clock, something I have never drawn before. Mainly, we are supposed to draw lots of different icons that would go on the clock, and lots of details, pretties, etc.
From what I am understanding of reading books about art licensing, we should be making lots of icons that can be used in borders, and other matching pieces.
I have been doodling for the last couple of hours and have about 5 pages of doodles, some that I like and some I think are crap. But that’s part of doodling, isn’t it. I keep thinking I should be drawing really careful and really pretty things, but the assignment said to be messy and just go with what happens on the page, at least that’s what I got out of it. So that’s what I’m doing.
I am one of those artists that can’t just draw something and have it look great. I need to draw, redraw, and then scan it into the computer and fix it up. So the above doodles I am showing might look bad, but it’s just stage one of my art process.
I think what we will end up doing in the main assignment (I’m guessing) is take the doodles that we like and create a full cuckoo clock artwork from those. I, of course, am doing a cat clock, cuz that’s just the way I roll (lol).
